My name is Pat Romain born Patricia Temple-Heald
I decided to write my memoirs for the benefit of my family, especially my 20 nephews and nieces. Having realized that no one in my life has known my whole story. Even my oldest brother didn’t know everything as I’d left home at 18 and after marrying moved from Manchester to Kent and then after retiring to southwest France.
My path has been taught to us and has given me many experiences which I have benefited from. Not all my experiences have been good but I have chosen to look for the benefits of each to help me grow and build by self-confidence, which is what has held me back for so much of my life.
Having decided at age seven I wanted to be a nursing manager. I achieved this age 25 and needed another goal in my life. So my next step was to become a nurse teacher, achieved at age 30. After this my life took a turn into something totally unexpected. I stepped into the world of Computing. From here I became self-employed for the next 20 years, but doing agency nursing when life got tough in between. During which I studied for and achieved a BA in psychology.
Throughout my working life I have also done volunteer work and during some of this work have met two Dukes, one Prince and taught a judge to use his computer. I’ve been invited to Prince Charles’ garden party at Buckingham Palace and I have learned a lot about nature through wildlife trusts.
At age 60 my official retirement age, I was enjoying my work and continued until I became disheartened once again, after I had worked up to become a regional manager for
Saint John Ambulance. This is like the Red Cross but only in the UK, but I was anxious about retiring and becoming bored so I was delighted to be invited to live in France and help to build an Eco community and training center. This sounded like an ideal Challenge for retirement. I thrive on a challenge which is probably why I hated school as I was so bored. After nine years in Montolieu living in a four story Tannery, we decided to move into a bungalow in Leuc. Here I set up a retirement club with the help of my husband and two residents and became president of the club for three years, after which I passed on the baton to other members. I now continue to offer English classes for adults as a volunteer and run a B&B in our home.

It was never about becoming rich or famous. It was more about helping others that she desired. Her first goal became apparent at the age of seven, when she had an eye operation to correct a squint. What she saw when the bandages were removed influenced her life beyond her wildest dreams. She saw a nurse wearing a beautiful frilly cap with wings, and she said, “I want one of those.” This determined her first career. She became a nursing sister in the UK at the age of 25, after much endeavor and disappointments along the way. New paragraph. Yeah, that was saying it. Following this, she felt empty and needed another goal. Not liking administrative work, she opted to become a nurse teacher. This she achieved at the age of 30. While working in this role, she became disheartened by the lowering of standards in the National Health Service, and took the bold step of moving into marketing computers and computer software. The next door to open was to go self-employed, teaching others to use computers in their work. This all happened before the IBM PC was developed. While working as a training consultant for businesses large and small, she became involved in helping a psychologist who had treated her with alternative therapies. Here, she met a group of psychologists at a party and decided that she was capable of gaining a degree in psychology. This was achieved at the age of 50, through the Open University. When disaster struck and money became scarce, she decided to apply for a job. She gained a position as manager for the county of Kent for St. John Ambulance, a charity specializing in first aid. She retired at 63 after being promoted to regional training standards manager for the southeast of England.

How Pat became a published author through compelling and inspiring writing. Having decided to write her memoirs, Pat subscribed to an online writer’s course. This gave her the basic questions to ask herself and tips on the flow of the story. But what clinched it for her was when she went to her first book signing. There, she met several authors, but one in particular, who was the same age and was a successful copywriter. They immediately struck up a lasting friendship. When Marie read Pat’s story, she saw great potential and agreed to help her. She rewrote the first paragraph into a more dynamic style and explained how to do this. After two years and many editions later, Pat added several photos which would enhance the story and decided to self-publish using Amazon. Having published her book in English and sold several copies, she agreed to translate it into French so that her French friends could enjoy it too.

So when she enrolled with the Open University, she learned a lot more about herself and was surprised and thrilled to find that she could write 3,000-word essays towards her BA. Consequently, when she found herself at another crossroads, she realized something else. None of her family or friends had known her throughout her life and thought it might be a good idea to write her life story and how to make opportunities from difficulties.
